Introduction

ZEN GARDEN
As eating‘sushi’is recently becoming more popular in many countries, some of Japanese cultures such as Kabuki and Tea ceremony are appreciated world wide.
So too are Japanese gardens. Their tradition has been influencing the creation of new gardens and landscapes in other countries. Interest in the gardens of Japan stems from an empathy with their unique quantities: the feeling of stillness and serenity they evoke, their deep symbolic meaning or their developed artistry. They can be perceived and appreciated on many levels, and people find them pleasing or fulfilling for different reasons. One reason for popular modern interest in Japanese gardens is their ability to capture the essence of nature. Our history and land where there is a marked difference between the seasons cultivated our particular sensitivity to the nature. Western gardening traditions obviously bring nature into the garden but generally in a humanized condition. In contrast, the Japanese tries to be in harmony with nature.
Our gardens are expression of our relationship to the natural world. Over the centuries Japanese beliefs and religions have been intimately associated with aspects of the universe that are profound than the senses. The belief that natural objects are the abode of spirits came from Shinto, the indigenous religion of Japan. Zen Buddhism inspired people to design gardens for contemplative or meditative practices, or to illustrate a particular Zen concept.

What is Zen garden?

The development of the garden design has evolved continually over the past millennium. Nevertheless, within that long history, there have been certain special times when dramatic shifts have taken place and garden designers were inspired to create new forms of gardens.
During Kamakura and Muromachi period, when power was shifted from the aristocracy to the warriors, Zen influenced gardens flourished. The warrior class became a center of society and the patrons of culture encouraging an aesthetic of frugality.
ZEN GARDEN Zen Buddhism which came from China greatly appealed to the warriors as it focused on self-enlightenment,‘Jiriki’(自力) through meditation unlike other sects of Buddhism to call on the help of a higher being,‘Tariki’(他力). For those who spent most of their lives in self-training and whose success in battle depends on the ability to clear mind and forget the fear of death, Zen notion that detachment from the world and even oneself ‘Munenmuso’(無我夢想) is essential to perceive ‘the truth of the universe’ was seen consistent. Consequently Zen temples relied on the warriors for sponsorship and the gardens that reflects Zen concept became their favorites
Zen influenced gardens preferably use the style of‘Kare-san-sui’(枯山水:dry landscape garden), in which sands and stones are manipulated to represent mountains, river or the sea without using real water
Those symbolic and miniaturized gardens are described as the garden of simplicity. Restrained use of color and materials is important to achieve monochromatic feeling and austere sublimity, which people at that time favored.
In connection with Zen Buddhism, the gardens are often something to imply religious or philosophical meanings and values. The viewers therefore, need to see what lies hidden beyond the superficiality.
Seeing water where there is no water and seeing mountains where there is no mountain are like the meditation developing the mind to a level where one directly experiences the infinite. In this stage one has an immediate insight into the nature of universe, which is in Zen philosophy considered to be‘Mu/Ku’(無/空:nothingness, void) where everything is born and belong to.
Cutting all the ornamental things, that is , simplifying everything to its essence, the garden allow one to know even single stone can tell what is the nature of the universe since it, everything, belongs to it.
